Rotate Image

Your phone photo is sideways. A scanned document is upside down. A logo needs to be mirrored horizontally. Convertly's Image Rotator fixes orientation in seconds — rotating 90°, 180°, or 270°, flipping horizontally or vertically — with lossless EXIF-aware rotation that does not re-encode or degrade the image. No sign-up. No watermarks. Files automatically deleted in 120 minutes.

What Is Image Rotation?

Image rotation is the operation of reorienting a raster image's pixel grid by a specified angle. For 90°, 180°, and 270° rotations, this is a lossless transposition operation — rows and columns of pixels are swapped and inverted mathematically without any interpolation or quality degradation. For arbitrary angle rotations (e.g., 15°), interpolation is required to fill diagonal sub-pixel boundaries, which may introduce minor quality changes.

Convertly's rotation engine supports two distinct operational modes. For standard rotations (90°, 180°, 270°), Pillow's transpose() method performs a pure pixel matrix transposition — zero re-encoding, without quality loss, near-instantaneous execution. For JPEG images with an orientation EXIF tag (EXIF tag 0x0112), the engine reads the embedded orientation metadata and applies the correct physical rotation to produce a properly oriented output, then strips the orientation tag to prevent viewers from re-applying the rotation.

Flip operations — horizontal mirroring (left/right) and vertical mirroring (top/bottom) — are lossless transposition operations. Horizontal flip reflects the pixel grid around the vertical axis; vertical flip reflects around the horizontal axis without re-sampling or altering pixel fidelity.

How to Convert Files with Rotate Image

How to Use Rotate Image

  1. Step 1: Upload Image — Select your photo.
  2. Step 2: Choose Rotation — Rotate 90°, 180°, or flip horizontally.
  3. Step 3: Download Result — Save your oriented image.

What to Expect from Image Rotation

What Usually Converts Well

  • Orthogonal Rotations (90°, 180°, 270°): Re-orients canvas dimensions cleanly with transposed pixel coordinates.
  • Automatic Canvas Expansion: Expands the bounding canvas box to fit rotated dimensions without clipping image corners.
  • Horizontal and Vertical Flipping: Reflects pixel coordinates cleanly along horizontal or vertical axes.
  • Format Continuity: Preserves transparency in PNG/WebP and saves JPEGs at high quality (95).

What May Require Adjustment

  • Arbitrary Non-90° Angles: Rotating at non-orthogonal angles (e.g., 45°) introduces rectangular corner padding (transparent for PNG, white for JPG) to maintain a rectangular canvas.
  • Minor JPEG Re-encoding: JPEG files undergo standard high-quality re-encoding upon save; slight re-quantization occurs as with any image save operation.

When to Inspect Output

  • Non-Orthogonal Rotations: Inspect corner padding around tilted images before embedding into graphic layouts.

Before You Rotate: Technical Boundaries & Limitations

Standard High-Quality JPEG Re-Encoding

JPEG files undergo standard high-quality re-encoding upon save; lossless bitstream transformation without re-compression requires specialized DCT tools.

Corner Canvas Padding on Tilted Rotations

Rotations at arbitrary angles introduce background corner padding around the tilted graphic.

100 MB File Size Ceiling

Images up to 100MB are supported per session.

Troubleshooting Common Rotate Image Issues

Q: My rotated image still displays sideways on some platforms.

The output image from Convertly has the EXIF orientation tag stripped and the physical pixels correctly rotated. If the image still displays sideways, the viewing platform is applying a cached version or there is a browser cache issue. Try a hard refresh (Ctrl+Shift+R) or re-upload the downloaded file.

Q: My PNG image has a white or black background after rotation.

Convertly preserves PNG alpha transparency during rotation. If you are seeing an opaque background, ensure the output format is set to PNG — if you accidentally converted to JPEG during rotation, JPEG composites transparency to white. Re-process with PNG output selected.

Q: The rotation appears to have reduced my image quality.

For JPEG outputs, Convertly re-encodes at Q95 after rotation since JPEG is an asymmetric format that requires re-encoding for physical pixel changes. If quality is critical for repeated operations, convert to PNG first (lossless), perform all rotation operations, then convert back to JPEG as the final step.

Frequently Asked Questions (Rotate Image)

Will this fix EXIF orientation on iPhones?

Yes, pixels are physically rotated and EXIF tags updated.
