What Is Image Cropping?

Image cropping is the operation of selecting a rectangular region of a raster image and discarding all pixels outside that region — producing a smaller image that contains only the selected content. Unlike resizing, cropping does not interpolate or resample pixels — it is a pure selection operation that preserves 100% of the pixel quality within the cropped region.

Convertly's crop engine accepts bounding box coordinates (X offset, Y offset, Width, Height in pixels from the top-left corner) or standard aspect ratio presets. The engine uses Python Pillow's crop() method, which performs a direct pixel slice from the source image raster — no resampling, no quality loss, no artifact introduction. Output image dimensions are exactly the specified width and height at native pixel quality.

Aspect ratio presets include: 1:1 (square, for Instagram and profile photos), 16:9 (landscape, for YouTube thumbnails and banners), 9:16 (portrait, for Instagram Stories and TikTok), 4:5 (portrait, for Instagram feed), 4:3 (standard photo, for prints and presentations), and 3:2 (DSLR native aspect ratio). In ratio mode, Convertly crops from the center of the image — preserving the compositional center point of the photograph.

How to Convert Files with Crop Image

What to Expect from Image Cropping

What Usually Converts Well

  • Exact Pixel Area Extraction: Isolates the designated rectangular bounding box without altering pixel values inside the crop perimeter.
  • Automatic Boundary Clamping: Constrains crop coordinates within original canvas boundaries to prevent out-of-bounds errors.
  • Format and Transparency Retention: Retains transparency channels in PNG/WebP and saves JPEGs at high quality (95).
  • Reduced File Size: Removing surrounding unused canvas areas naturally lowers overall pixel counts and file footprints.

What May Require Adjustment

  • Reduced Canvas Dimensions: Output pixel width and height match the crop rectangle rather than original full canvas dimensions.

When to Inspect Output

  • Subject Framing and Margins: Verify that your crop boundaries left adequate breathing room around the intended subject.

Before You Crop: Technical Boundaries & Limitations

Rectangular Crops Only

Crops are axis-aligned rectangular boxes; circular, polygonal, or freeform lasso crops are not supported.

Coordinates Clamped to Canvas

Crop coordinates extending outside original image dimensions are clamped to image boundaries.

100 MB File Size Ceiling

Source images up to 100MB are supported per session.

Troubleshooting Common Crop Image Issues

Q: My crop coordinates produced unexpected output dimensions.

Verify that your X + Width and Y + Height values do not exceed the source image dimensions. Convertly clips the bounding box to the image boundary if coordinates extend outside the source canvas — check source image width and height before specifying your crop region.

Q: The aspect ratio crop is not centered on my subject.

Ratio presets crop from the image center by default. For off-center subject crops (e.g., a person on the left side of a landscape photo), use Custom Coordinates mode to manually specify the exact X,Y offset that best frames your subject.

Q: My transparent PNG has a white background after cropping.

Convertly preserves full PNG alpha transparency during crop operations. If you are seeing a white background, ensure the output format is set to PNG — JPEG does not support alpha channels and will render transparency as white.

Frequently Asked Questions (Crop Image)

Does cropping reduce pixel clarity of the cropped region?

No, original pixel data within the crop box is retained losslessly.
