Split PDF

You have a 200-page legal brief and need only the exhibits on pages 140–180. Or you have a combined invoice PDF and need each invoice as its own separate file. Convertly's PDF Splitter extracts exactly the pages you need — by custom range, by individual page, or by splitting every single page into its own document — without touching or degrading the original content. No sign-up. No watermarks. Files automatically deleted in 120 minutes.

What Is a PDF Splitter?

A PDF splitter reads the internal page tree of a Portable Document Format document and writes a subset of its pages into one or more new, standalone PDF files. The original document is not altered — the splitter reads page object references and clones them into fresh output documents.

Convertly's PDF Split engine is powered by PyMuPDF (MuPDF C library), which reads PDF binary object streams natively. When you define a page range — say "3-7, 12, 20-25" — the engine resolves those page indices, copies the page content stream, embedded font subsets, inline images, and annotation objects into a new PDF document, and writes it with a new cross-reference table. Nothing is rasterized. Vector text and crisp imagery are preserved at 100% original fidelity.

Two splitting modes are available: Range Mode lets you define one or more specific page ranges (e.g., "1-10", "11-20", "21-30") and receive each range as a separate downloadable PDF. Per-Page Mode automatically splits every page into its own individual file and bundles them all into a single ZIP archive for bulk download. Both modes preserve interactive hyperlinks, form fields, bookmarks, and embedded metadata for each extracted section.

How to Convert Files with Split PDF

How to Use Split PDF

  1. Step 1: Upload PDF Document — Upload the PDF you wish to split or divide.
  2. Step 2: Define Page Range — Specify custom ranges (e.g. 1-5, 8, 11-14) or split all pages individually.
  3. Step 3: Download Extracted Pages — Save your extracted PDF or download a ZIP archive containing individual pages.

What to Expect When Splitting PDF Files

What Usually Converts Well

  • Precise Page Range Extraction: Isolates requested chapters, individual pages, or multi-page ranges cleanly into a new standalone document.
  • Vector and Font Stream Integrity: Page content streams and typography are copied at the binary object level without rasterization or downsampling.
  • Embedded Graphic Clarity: High-resolution photographs, charts, and vector illustrations on selected pages retain original visual fidelity.
  • Stream Compaction and Deflate: Object references associated with omitted pages are purged upon save with Level-3 garbage collection.

What May Require Adjustment

  • Table of Contents Outlines: Interactive bookmarks pointing to omitted pages may be trimmed or become inactive in the split output.
  • Internal Cross-Reference Hyperlinks: Clickable links pointing to pages outside your extracted range will no longer have an internal destination.
  • Static Page Numbering Footers: Printed footer numbers (such as "Page 15 of 50") remain as originally printed on the physical page surface.

When to Inspect Output

  • Extracted Section Boundaries: Verify that the first and last pages of the split document correspond exactly to your intended section boundaries.
  • Interactive Document Outlines: Inspect bookmark navigation if your original document relied heavily on multi-level chapter bookmarks.

Before You Split: Technical Boundaries & Limitations

Static Numbering Is Not Re-Indexed

Splitting does not rewrite hardcoded footer text; use Convertly Page Numbers if unified sequential numbering is required.

Encrypted PDFs Require Decryption First

Password-locked documents cannot be split without prior decryption using Convertly Unlock PDF.

Document Outline Detachment

Bookmarks that target omitted pages are automatically detached from the document outline.

100 MB File Size Ceiling

Source PDF files up to 100MB are supported per session.

Troubleshooting Common Split PDF Issues

Q: My page range produced an empty or incorrectly bounded output file.

PDF page indices in Convertly are 1-based (page 1 is the first page of the document). Verify your range numbers using the thumbnail preview. Also check whether the PDF has preface pages using Roman numerals that shift the numerical content pages forward.

Q: The split failed with an error — the PDF appears to be password-protected.

Encrypted PDFs cannot be processed until decrypted. Use Convertly's Unlock PDF tool to remove the access password, then return to PDF Split and upload the decrypted file.

Q: My ZIP archive download did not start on mobile.

Enable "Allow Downloads" in your mobile browser's site permissions for convertlytools.xyz. Alternatively, use the QR Code feature to transfer files directly to your phone's native Files app or browser.

Q: Interactive links and annotations are missing from extracted pages.

Convertly's PyMuPDF engine preserves annotations and hyperlinks by default during page cloning. If links appear broken, the original PDF may have used document-level cross-references that point outside the extracted page range — this is a structural limitation of the source file.

Q: The conversion timed out on a very large PDF.

If your PDF is near the 100MB ceiling and contains thousands of pages, try splitting it in two passes: first extract the front half (pages 1–N/2), then the back half (pages N/2+1 to N). Each split operation will complete faster than processing the entire document at once.
